Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You're not smart enough, and you shouldn't work at a bank.
How I responded:
I came in every single day, focused and determined that I was going to make a difference. I continued to learn and to listen to how my peers did their jobs, so when that job opportunity presented itself, I showed that I can do the work and I was the one they came to when they had a problem.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I came from a middle income family, but I didn't have it easy. I remember the days I would squeeze my feet into my sister's sneakers. I didn't have the cool clothes growing up, but I was fed and had a warm bed to sleep in. I am thankful for that!
Most of my friends growing up were killed, placed in jail, or just linger around my old neighborhood. It was always a challenge to be better, but I took it by the horns and faced every obstacle head on.
It was a long road, and no one in my family had ever finished their bachelor's degree. It was an honor, but at the same time, I had people who would be negative toward that fact. So I basically removed those negative influences out of my life.
